Two wild elephants have entered the Bamboo Bazaar area of Mysore city in Karnataka, and have trampled a security guard to death.
The government announced a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh for the family of the deceased.
Forest guards and Mysore zoo authorities have been contacted and the smaller of the two elephants has been injected with a tranquilizer.
It is still not clear where the wild tuskers came from and how they entered the city.
